The Rivian R1S has earned a Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) after the automaker upgraded its model to improve its performance in overlap front crash testing. And Rivian Automotive on Wednesday announced that the R1S SUV has been selected by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) for the year 2023. This award is applicable from January this year.
The Rivian R1S is the only vehicle to ever win the Top Safety Pick+ award in the large SUV category. And the Rivian becomes one of only three large pickups to date to earn the Top Safety Pick+ designation. In order to receive the Top Safety Pick+ award from IIHS, a vehicle can achieve its performance in crash tests, for which the IIHS requires at least a “Good” rating in each test. The Rivian joins the R1T pickup in this designation.
Rivian has updated its Modolo 2023 post-R1S vehicles to receive the Top Safety Pick+ award, and Rivian vehicles now meet all criteria for the higher level Top Safety Pick+ award, both before and after January The differences between R1S builds are still the same, and those built after January, the IIHS stated that the requirements now include getting a good rating for any award, rather than just high praise. Now the Rivian R1S has a standard front crash system. which received better ratings in vehicle-to-pedestrian assessment during day and night
The IIHS states that previously manufactured models are not eligible for the award because of an acceptable rating in the original Moderate Overlap Front Test. The driver-side floor pan buckled during the test, indicating a high-force injury to the driver dummy’s right lower leg.
IIHS says that now, as in the past, to receive the award, a vehicle must receive Good ratings in the driver-side small overlap front and passenger-side small overlap front, and basic medium overlap front tests. And the sturdiness of the roof is also included, the IIHS says. Head restraints are no longer part of the award criteria, and vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention ratings are no longer part of the award criteria.
